We were in Japan recently so that I could explore the concepts of Kitsugi and to visit the Hokusai museum. In Tokyo we were walking down a quiet street and I stopped to look at a stand of Japanese Larch. Looking up at the foliage above us, it was as though the trees were reaching out to each other yet letting in the light to reach the plants below.
This is what actors need in our tough industry. We have to care for each other, for ourselves and for the work we make.
From crown to roots, trees care of themselves and of the forest around them with a self-sustaining eco-system. As a community of creatives we have to care for ourselves — and also care for each other.
CROWN-SHYNESS
Crown shyness, when gaps appear in the canopy, lets trees create a connected, protective veil while also allowing light to reach the forest floor. And, by not touching their neighbours, trees may be able to limit the spread of transmission of harmful diseases and insects from tree to tree.
Sound familiar? Yes, this…
