Life is a journey, not a destination.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have an admission to make. I don’t get objectives. I never use them because this idea just does not kick-in for me. I never ask actors, “What is your objective?” To me that is like asking, “What is your destination?” instead of, “What is your journey?”

I guess I prefer to be more subjective than objective. Rather than helicoptering up to ask the question, “What is the objective?” I like to dig down into the weeds and dwell moment by moment in each tiny beat of the scene. Only then can I emerge and come to an understanding of the character and the events.

TRACK-WALK

Maybe you remember my actor friend Gerard Carroll aka Smokey. He stars in my Substack article How To Learn Lines.

Gerard was recently watching the Netflix series DRIVE TO SURVIVE, having never watched Formula One before. He said, “The series follows various teams over the season. It is almost Shakespearean at times.”
