I was rummaging in our garage and I found this, my father's old spirit level from the 1960s. So I brought it into my office, and now I keep it next to my desk. I often hold onto it if I want to settle myself or level my spirit.
The pioneering New Zealand film producer John O'Shea once called my dad on the phone and asked him to come over and do some post-sinking. My dad duly arrived wearing his shorts and carrying his shovel and tools, ready to sink some posts. He was a radio broadcaster and journalist, but all the creatives in those days could easily turn their hand to building and construction. Only when he got to the address, Pacific Film Studios, did my dad realise that the job was for some voiceover post-synching.
