Are you phantastic?
To be phantastic is to be someone who easily sees images in your mind. To be aphantastic is to find images harder to summon. The term comes from the word phantasm, a ghost or apparition.
When we tell stories, we see images. Language is a stream of sounds that humans have evolved to describe the pictures in our minds and also the world around us. Those images in your mind’s eye derive from everything you have ever experienced, re-constituted to create new universes in your consciousness, or as neuroscientist Anil Seth puts it:
Our multisensory, panoramic, 3D, fully immersive inner movie.
In fact, some people would go so far as to say there is no such thing as imagination — there is only memory.
Even memory is a trace, affected by your state of mind, your focus and your mood at the time you experienced an event and then again at the time you recall it. In this way, imagination is a composite of your memories.
