Sounds, colours and words have a miraculously expressive power, beyond all representation
— Bonnard and Vuillard
Here I am in Tokyo with my family. We have just arrived and I can't wait to explore and find new ways to think about acting and directing. I have often talked to actors and directors about Japanese values like Kintsugi and Ma. These feed powerfully into our capacity to be human, to live truly in the moment.
Kintsugi is about the value of broken-ness.
Ma is defined as "an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled"
They both sound like screen acting to me! Watch this space.
INTIMISM
So, today I am writing about an art practice which seems to me to be very Japanese, even though it is actually a French painting style from the start of the 20th Century. It is called Intimism and it celebrates and explores the tiny moments in domestic life.
Are you an actor, a director or a writer? Then congratulations, you are an Intimist!
