CREATING CHEMISTRY

What is Chemistry? It is a natural science, dealing with the composition, structure, properties and behaviour of matter and the changes it undergoes during reactions with other substances.

Chemistry between actors is what directors, casting directors and audiences are looking for in the matching-up of leads in movies and television.

Chemistry is when something in you changes something in the other person, the "reaction with other substances" in the definition above — a lift in dopamine, seratonin, oxytocin, adrenaline, testosterone or cortisol.

A ‘chemistry read’ is when you read against one or more actors being considered for a role opposite yours. The main purpose of a chemistry read — so that directors and producers can choose the right partners to create screen magic — is to see how you and another actor might connect and work within a scene and transform each other.

Can chemistry be created? Or is it something elusive, beyond your control? I say yes, you can create chemistry.
